Inside her store, the familiar scent of dried goods, tanned leather, and woodsmoke offered a comforting counterpoint. She watched as a young woman, her apron dusted with flour, carefully selected a length of sturdy blue cloth. “For my daughter’s school dress, Eliza,” she explained, her voice bright with anticipation. “She’s so excited to finally learn her letters.” Eliza smiled, a genuine warmth spreading through her. This was the heart of it, wasn't it? Not just the furs and the trade, but the building of lives, the planting of roots.
