It was a relentless, unforgiving heat that baked the earth and sucked the very life out of the vibrant green that had begun to emerge from their efforts. Amina shielded her eyes, her gaze sweeping over the wilting leaves of their community garden. The tender shoots, once so full of promise, now drooped, their heads bowed in defeat. A knot of worry tightened in her chest. This was more than just a difficult day; it was a sign.

Kato, usually bouncing with boundless energy, stood beside her, his shoulders slumped. He kicked at a clod of dry, cracked earth. "It's... it's dying, Amina," he whispered, his voice heavy with a sadness that mirrored her own. "The beans, the maize, everything."

Amina knelt, her fingers brushing against the brittle leaves of a tomato plant. They crumbled under her touch. The water they had so carefully conserved, the precious drops they had painstakingly collected, were no longer enough. The sky, once a canvas of soft blues and fluffy whites, was now a vast, unbroken expanse of searing azure, devoid of even a hint of a cloud. The land was thirsty, and their efforts felt like a mere whisper against its roar of need.
