The sun beat down, a relentless golden hammer on the cracked earth. Dust devils danced in lazy pirouettes across the parched village square. Amina sat beneath the skeletal branches of the old mango tree, the tattered map spread before her. Its faded lines and cryptic symbols, once a source of thrilling mystery, now felt like a heavy weight. The drought had tightened its grip, and the village well, once a gurgling heart, had dwindled to a choked whisper. Whispers of worry had turned into murmurs of despair.

Kato, his brow furrowed with concern, kicked at a loose stone. “Amina, what are we going to do? Mama says even the cassava is wilting. And the little ones… they’re so thirsty.” His usual boisterous energy seemed to have been leached away by the heat, replaced by a quiet anxiety.

Amina traced a finger over a series of wavy lines on the map, lines that Nalongo had explained represented water sources, both seen and unseen. She remembered Nalongo’s gentle voice, her eyes wise with the knowledge of seasons past. “Nalongo told us that the land remembers,” Amina murmured, more to herself than to Kato. “She said even when the sky is empty, the earth holds secrets.”
