Detective Coley’s gut churned, a familiar, unwelcome knot tightening with each passing second. The sterile gleam of the crime scene tape, the hushed urgency of the uniformed officers, the metallic tang of blood – it was a symphony he knew too well. But today, the conductor was a shock of auburn hair and eyes that held a universe of unspoken things. Liana. Standing there, beneath the harsh glare of the forensic lights, a glint of crimson on the kitchen floor reflecting in her wide, terrified gaze, and in her trembling hand, the murder weapon. A wicked-looking chef’s knife, its blade still slick with the life that had so recently ebbed away.

“Liana,” Coley said, his voice a low rumble, carefully devoid of the sudden jolt that had seized him. He approached her with the practiced calm of a man who had seen too much, his gaze never leaving hers, nor the knife. “What are you doing here?”

She flinched, her knuckles white around the handle. Her breath hitched, a ragged sound in the otherwise still air. “Detective,” she whispered, her voice strained, barely audible above the distant wail of a siren. “I… I found him.”
