Detective Coley’s gut twisted with a familiar, unwelcome unease. Liana. Of all the people to find standing over a corpse, clutching a bloodied knife like a macabre trophy, it had to be her. The woman who had once danced on the razor’s edge of the criminal underworld, a ghost in the periphery of his cases, now stood bathed in the stark, unforgiving glare of police floodlights, a suspect. He’d seen her eyes before, flickers of intelligence and desperation, but now they held a different kind of fear, a raw, exposed vulnerability that pricked at a long-dormant corner of his own conscience.

“Liana,” he said, his voice a low rumble, careful to keep the surprise, the accusation, from seeping into its tone. He gestured for the uniformed officers to hold back, a silent command they somehow understood. The air around them thickened, heavy with the metallic tang of blood and the unspoken history between them.

She flinched at his voice, her grip on the knife tightening almost imperceptibly. Her eyes, wide and dark, met his, and for a fleeting second, he saw the ghost of the young woman who had fed him scraps of information, the one he’d pulled from the shadows with promises of a better life. But that was a long time ago. Now, she was a woman caught in a nightmare, and he was the one tasked with unraveling it.
