The Shadow's Grasp
The air in Elara’s room seemed to thicken, each breath a little heavier than the last. The silver locket, nestled against her skin, pulsed with a warmth that had become both familiar and unnerving. Tonight, the hum was louder, a resonant thrum that vibrated through her bones. Sleep, when it finally claimed her, was not a gentle descent into darkness but a plunge into a swirling kaleidoscope of images.
She stood in a garden, impossibly vibrant, where flowers bloomed in hues unseen by mortal eyes. Their petals unfurled like silken banners, each one whispering secrets on the breeze. A woman, her face a blur of soft light, knelt amongst the blossoms, her hands moving with a grace that spoke of ancient knowledge. As Elara watched, the woman cupped a single bloom, and from its heart, a gentle luminescence bloomed, bathing her in an ethereal glow. The light, Elara felt, was not just seen but felt – a balm to a hidden ache. Then, the scene shifted.
She was on a cliff edge, the wind whipping her hair around her face. Below, a churning sea mirrored a sky bruised with twilight. Another woman stood there, her silhouette sharp against the fading light. This one clutched a locket, identical to Elara’s, and as she raised it, a shield of shimmering energy, like spun moonlight, emanated from it, deflecting unseen arrows that rained down from the darkening heavens. Fear, sharp and cold, pierced Elara’s dream-self.
