The California sun, usually a balm, felt like a harsh spotlight today, exposing every flaw in Anya’s carefully constructed facade. She stood on the periphery of a Hollywood party, a glittering, cacophonous affair spilling onto a sprawling Beverly Hills lawn. Champagne flutes clinked like tiny bells, laughter bubbled like champagne itself, and the air thrummed with an electric energy that Anya had once craved, but now found almost suffocating. Eleanor Vance, her agent, a woman whose sharp suits and sharper wit had become Anya’s guiding stars, had insisted she attend. “Networking, Anya,” she’d said, her voice clipped and efficient. “It’s not just about talent; it’s about being seen.”

And Anya was being seen. Or rather, she felt she should be seen. Her small role in that indie film had garnered a smattering of good reviews, whispers of a promising new talent. But whispers, she was learning, didn't pay the rent, nor did they land you the roles that truly mattered. She nursed a glass of sparkling water, feeling the familiar prickle of insecurity beneath her borrowed designer dress. Antoine’s absence was a palpable ache. He, with his effortless Parisian charm, would have navigated this throng with an artist’s grace, drawing people in, making Anya feel like the center of his own universe, even in a crowd. But Antoine was… complicated. His Parisian past, a shadowy tapestry he’d so far refused to fully unfurl, had begun to cast a long, unsettling shadow over their present.
