The weight of her mother’s words settled over Elara like a soft blanket, warm and comforting, yet tinged with the melancholy of a long winter. Amortal. The word itself felt like a secret whispered on the wind, a melody sung by the moon. It explained so much – the way her mother’s eyes held the wisdom of forgotten ages, the gentle ache of loneliness that sometimes clung to her, the peculiar way the world seemed to hold its breath around Elara, as if unsure how to categorize a child who simply… was.
“So, I’ll never grow old?” Elara asked, her voice a quiet ripple in the stillness of their small cottage. She traced the faint, star-shaped mark on her palm, the one that mirrored the symbol on the locket her mother had given her. It felt less like a brand now, and more like a promise.
Her mother’s smile was a fragile thing, like frost on a windowpane. “You will remain as you are, my moonbeam. Forever young, forever bright.” She reached out, her hand, so impossibly soft and smooth, stroking Elara’s cheek. It was a touch that held the memory of countless years, a testament to a love that had endured the passage of time, even as time itself seemed to have forgotten her. “But with that gift comes a great responsibility, Elara. And a need for great protection.”
