Elara watched her mother from the window, the setting sun painting the sky in hues of rose and lavender. Her mother, with her silvery hair and eyes that held the depth of ancient forests, was stirring a pot over the hearth. There was a quiet sadness that always seemed to linger around her, like a gentle mist, and Elara’s heart ached with a question she couldn’t quite articulate. Why was her mother always so sad? Why did she never grow older, not really, but also never seem to have friends her own age, friends like the ones Elara sometimes saw skipping through the village square?

Lately, a new presence had begun to weave itself into their quiet existence. A wolf, with fur the color of twilight and eyes like polished amber, had started appearing at the edge of the woods. It never made a sound, never threatened, but it was always there, watching. Elara felt a strange pull towards the creature, a silent understanding that hummed between them. Her mother, however, reacted with a fierce, protective instinct that Elara had never witnessed before. Her hand would tighten on Elara’s shoulder, her gaze sharp and wary, as if the wolf were a shadow that could snatch Elara away.

One afternoon, while exploring the dusty attic, Elara’s fingers brushed against a small, tarnished wooden box tucked away in a forgotten corner. Inside, nestled on faded velvet, lay a locket. It was delicate, crafted from a metal that gleamed dully, and etched upon its surface was a symbol – a crescent moon cradling a single, radiant star. As Elara’s breath hitched, her gaze fell upon her own left hand. There, on her palm, was a faint, almost invisible mark, a swirling pattern that mirrored the locket’s design. A shiver, not of cold but of profound recognition, traced its way up her spine.
