Chapter 6
Echoes of Eternity
Elara presses her mother for answers about the mark and the wolf. Her mother, with a heavy heart, begins to unveil the truth of Elara's Amortal heritage and the price of her gift.
Elara traced the faint, swirling lines on the back of her hand, the same pattern that bloomed on the tarnished silver locket she’d found tucked away in her mother’s sewing basket. The locket felt cool against her skin, a familiar weight that had somehow always been there, even before she knew its secret. The mark on her hand, however, was a constant, a whisper of something more, something different. Tonight, the questions that had been circling her mind for days felt too big to keep silent. The moon, a sliver of pearly light against the velvet sky, seemed to encourage honesty, its gentle glow illuminating the quiet room where she and her mother sat by the dying embers of the fire.
“Mother,” Elara began, her voice soft, barely disturbing the peaceful hush. She held out her hand, palm up, the locket resting beside it. “This mark… and this locket. They are the same. What does it mean?”
Her mother, who had been mending a worn wool blanket, paused, her needle hovering mid-air. Her face, usually etched with a gentle weariness, seemed to deepen with a shadow Elara had never seen before. It was a sorrow that seemed to stretch back through countless years, a weight of memories too heavy for one heart to carry. She looked at Elara’s hand, then at the locket, her gaze lingering as if seeing something far beyond the silver and the skin.
