Chapter 4
The Mark of the Amortal
While exploring an old chest, Elara finds a locket bearing a familiar symbol. It matches a faint mark on her hand, a brand that feels both ancient and deeply personal.
Elara traced the worn carvings on the lid of the old wooden chest, her fingers dancing over the faded images of swirling leaves and sleepy owls. It sat in the dusty corner of the attic, a forgotten treasure chest of memories, and today, her mother had finally let her explore its depths. The air up here was thick with the scent of dried lavender and old paper, a comforting perfume that always made Elara feel a little closer to the stories her mother sometimes shared.

It was heart-shaped, its surface dulled by time, but what caught Elara’s eye was the intricate symbol etched into its front. It was a delicate swirl, like a tiny, unfurling fern, and it felt strangely familiar, as if she had seen it somewhere before, a whisper of a memory just out of reach.
With a sigh of anticipation, Elara clasped the locket in her hand. It was cool against her skin, a stark contrast to the warmth that had begun to bloom in her chest. She turned it over and over, her brow furrowed in concentration. Then, as if pulled by an invisible thread, her gaze drifted down to her own left hand.
