Chapter 7

Whispers of the Pack

Valerius, his senses far sharper than any human's, detects a shift in the nocturnal currents. Dark whispers reach him, carried on the wind – tales of a rival vampire faction, a predatory pack drawn by the scent of his power and the vulnerability of the nearby human settlement. They see Oakhaven not as a home, but as a resource to be plundered, and Valerius himself as a rival to be eliminated or subjugated. This ancient, ruthless group views Elara's village as a mere stepping stone in their quest for dominance, their hunger for power insatiable, posing a new and immediate threat to everything Valerius has come to cherish.

The night air, usually a balm against my sun-scorched skin, now prickled with an unseen unease. Valerius, his hand a warm anchor on my arm, had gone still beside me, his unnervingly sharp senses tuned to something I could not perceive. His head tilted, a predator caught in a scent, his gaze fixed on the inky blackness beyond the edge of the village. The crimson moon, a swollen, blood-red eye in the velvet sky, cast long, distorted shadows that danced like wraiths.

And now, this.

Valerius didn't answer immediately. His jaw was tight, a muscle twitching beneath his pale skin. His eyes, those pools of ancient darkness, narrowed, reflecting the moonlight like polished obsidian. He was more than just a man; I knew that now. His strength, his aversion to the sun, the way he moved with a predatory grace – all pointed to a truth far more ancient and terrifying than I had dared to imagine.
