The air itself seemed to thicken, growing heavy and charged with an unseen energy. It was the kind of night that made the hairs on your arms prickle, the kind that whispered secrets through the rustling leaves of Oakhaven’s ancient oaks. But tonight, the whispers were louder, more insistent, and they all spoke of the crimson moon. It hung in the sky, a swollen, malevolent orb, bleeding its unholy light across the familiar landscape, transforming it into something alien and terrifying. The normally comforting glow of moonlight was gone, replaced by a searing, arterial red that painted the world in shades of blood.

I stood at the edge of the village, the scent of damp earth and night-blooming jasmine thick in my lungs, trying to ground myself. My hands, usually steady when grinding herbs or stitching wounds, trembled. The villagers had locked their doors, their faces pale and etched with a fear that went deeper than any ordinary dread. They knew, or at least suspected, that something ancient and hungry was stirring. They didn't know the half of it.

Valerius had warned me. His words, spoken in the hushed intimacy of his shadowed study, echoed in my mind. "This night, Elara, the veil thins. The old powers awaken. And those who have hunted me for centuries will see their chance." His eyes, usually pools of molten gold, had been dark with a premonition that chilled me to the bone.
