The midday sun beat down on Corinth, a relentless golden eye watching over the bustling city. Anya, perched on a crate behind a mountain of fragrant spices, felt the heat seep through her worn tunic. The marketplace was alive with a symphony of shouts, haggling, and the clang of hammers, a sound that usually filled her with a restless energy. But today, a different kind of noise buzzed in her ears – the echoes of division.
She had followed Silas, the man with the kind eyes and the secretive smile, to a quiet courtyard tucked away from the main thoroughfares. Here, in the dappled shade of an olive tree, a group of people gathered. They called themselves followers of the Teacher, the one spoken of in the scroll Anya had found. Hope, the scroll had whispered, a message of unity and love. But as Anya watched, listened, the hope seemed to be fraying at the edges, much like the faded robes of some of the people.
A man with a booming voice, his face flushed with conviction, gestured wildly. "The Teacher said we must be *distinct*! Separate from the ways of this corrupt city!" This was Marcus, Silas had whispered, one of the most fervent.
