Anya clutched the worn leather of her satchel, the precious scroll tucked safely within. The air in the courtyard buzzed with a nervous energy, a stark contrast to the boisterous marketplace she’d fled. Sunlight, fractured by the overhanging vines, dappled the stone floor where a group of people sat, their faces etched with a mixture of weariness and fierce conviction. Silas had led her here, his usual quiet demeanor replaced by an almost urgent haste, and now he stood a few paces back, his gaze fixed on a tall man with a beard streaked with grey. This was Marcus.
Marcus was unlike anyone Anya had encountered in the bustling agora. His posture was ramrod straight, his eyes, the color of a storm cloud, surveyed the small gathering with an intensity that made Anya’s stomach do a nervous flutter. He spoke with a voice that boomed, each word carrying the weight of absolute certainty. He was explaining something, his hands gesturing with sharp, decisive movements, and Anya strained to catch his words, though they were a jumble of pronouncements and exhortations.
Silas nudged her forward gently. “Go on, Anya. Speak to him.”
