Chapter 16
Silas Steps Forward
Silas, inspired by Anya's courage, uses his knowledge of the city to counter Lyra's plots, protecting Anya and the community he once wronged.
The midday sun beat down on Corinth, a relentless golden hammer forging the city's destiny in heat and dust. Anya, her small frame a whirlwind of determined energy, darted through the throng of the marketplace, the weight of the scroll tucked safely beneath her tunic. Lyra’s sharp eyes, like a hawk’s, had scanned the crowd, her voice a silken threat, but Anya had vanished, a ghost in the bustling labyrinth. Now, however, a new shadow fell, not of malice, but of a weary wisdom.
Silas emerged from the alleyway where he’d been watching, his face etched with a story Anya hadn’t yet learned. He had seen Lyra’s grasping fingers, her calculating gaze, and Anya’s quicksilver evasion. He had also seen something else, something that stirred the embers of his own long-dormant hope: Anya’s unwavering courage. He’d been a part of this city’s shadows for too long, a witness to its corruption and the heartbreaking divisions among the followers of the Teacher. He had once been a voice raised in anger, a hand that pushed, and the memory gnawed at him. But Anya, this slip of a girl, with her fierce belief and gentle heart, had reminded him of a different path.
“Lyra will not give up easily,” Silas said, his voice a low rumble that cut through the market din. He fell into step beside Anya, his presence a surprising comfort. “She smells opportunity like a hungry dog smells meat. And she sees you as a way to get to the scroll, or to the… the message.”
