The air in the small courtyard, usually alive with the murmur of earnest discussion, was thick with a different kind of energy. It crackled with suspicion, a storm brewing under the relentless Corinthian sun. Lyra’s whispers, like insidious vines, had wrapped themselves around the hearts of the believers, choking the fragile shoots of unity Anya had so carefully nurtured. A commotion erupted near the makeshift altar, a tangle of raised voices and accusatory fingers. Anya, her heart leaping into her throat, pushed through the concerned onlookers.
Marcus stood, his face a thundercloud, pointing a trembling finger at Silas. “He has betrayed us! He has taken what was meant for all, for himself!” His voice boomed, laced with a righteous fury that Anya had come to recognize as a shield for insecurity.
Silas, his usual calm façade fractured, looked bewildered. “That is a lie, Marcus! I would never—”
