Witnessing Anya's efforts, Silas reveals his own past involvement in the community's divisions. He confesses his guilt and seeks redemption through her actions.
The midday sun beat down on Corinth, turning the already bustling marketplace into a shimmering haze. Anya, her small frame almost lost amidst the throng of merchants hawking their wares and shoppers haggling for the best price, clutched the worn leather pouch to her chest. Inside, nestled amongst a few dried figs and a smooth, sea-worn stone, lay the scroll. It felt heavier than usual today, charged with a new urgency. She’d seen the way Silas’s eyes had followed her yesterday, a flicker of something akin to hope warring with a familiar weariness. He’d been watching her, not just her, but the way she’d spoken to Marcus and Lyra, the way she’d tried, however clumsily, to smooth the ruffled feathers of the quarreling followers.
Anya found Silas sitting in the shade of a sprawling olive tree, its gnarled branches offering a welcome respite from the relentless sun. He was mending a fishing net, his fingers moving with a practiced, almost meditative rhythm. He looked up as she approached, a faint smile touching his lips. "You have the look of someone who has wrestled with giants, little Anya."
She sat down beside him, the rough bark of the tree cool against her back. "Giants? No, Silas. Just… people. People who argue a lot." She hesitated, then decided to be brave. "You looked at me yesterday. While I was talking to Marcus and the others. What did you think?"
