Lyra attempts to manipulate Anya, offering wealth and security in exchange for information about the scroll and the believers, but Anya resists.
The midday sun beat down on the bustling Corinthian marketplace, its golden rays glinting off polished bronze and vibrant bolts of cloth. Anya, no bigger than a shadow herself, weaved through the throngs, her eyes scanning for any sign of Lyra. The merchant’s stall, usually overflowing with exotic spices and shimmering silks, seemed to beckon with a peculiar urgency. Anya clutched the worn leather pouch containing the scroll fragments tighter, a nervous flutter in her stomach. Lyra’s offer of a “special apprenticeship” had sounded too good to be true, a golden ticket out of her meager existence, but the woman’s sharp eyes held a glint that made Anya uneasy.
Lyra, a woman whose smile never quite reached her calculating eyes, sat amidst her wares, a silk scarf artfully draped around her shoulders. She waved Anya over with a manicured hand, her voice a silken purr that cut through the market din. “Ah, Anya, my little sparrow. Come closer. I have something for you.”
Anya approached, her heart thumping a frantic rhythm against her ribs. “You said… an apprenticeship, Mistress Lyra.”
