The stale, metallic tang of regret was a constant companion, clinging to me like the grime on my threadbare jacket. Every shadow seemed to whisper accusations, every gust of wind carried the echoes of laughter that once filled our small apartment, laughter that had long since turned to ash. Mom. Dad. The words were a raw wound, a gaping maw in the center of me that refused to heal. Akari said I shouldn’t dwell on it, that it was in the past, but how could I? How could I not when every bad choice, every desperate trade, every numb moment was a testament to that emptiness? I’d been the one to… no. I wouldn’t let that thought take root. Not again.

Akari was wrestling with her own demons, a more volatile, visible battle. The withdrawal was a brutal beast, clawing at her sanity. She’d been shaking, feverish, muttering incoherently. I’d held her close, whispering reassurances I barely believed myself, the acrid scent of sweat and fear thick in the air. Her eyes, usually so sharp and knowing, were wide and unfocused, darting to corners that held only peeling paint and darkness. But sometimes, in those moments of delirium, a flicker of something else would cross her face. A recognition. A pattern.

“It’s… it’s not just the sickness, AJ,” she’d rasped, her voice hoarse. She was clinging to my hand, her knuckles white. “There’s… a shape. A light. Like the symbols on that… that thing.”
