The chipped ceramic of the mug felt rough against my fingertips, a familiar anchor in the swirling chaos of my mind. Akari’s fingers, usually so steady, trembled as she poured the lukewarm water. Steam curled up, carrying the faint, bitter scent of cheap instant coffee, a smell that had become synonymous with our lives. Sunlight, thin and watery, struggled to pierce the grimy window of the abandoned shopfront we’d claimed as our own. It was a far cry from the plush carpets and polished wood of the houses we’d only ever glimpsed from the outside, but it was ours.

We just play ours.” My own fingers traced the faint, almost invisible lines etched into the mug, an unconscious mimicry of the patterns that had begun appearing on the artifact, the smooth, cool stone that had become both our salvation and our curse. It pulsed with a faint warmth against my skin, a constant, subtle thrum that vibrated through my very bones. It was a power I was still struggling to understand, let alone control.
