With Tennessee's Guidance
Lost and hunted, Akari begins to see visions of Tennessee, a spectral guide. He speaks in riddles, hinting at the artifact's true power and the ancient responsibility it carries, urging them to understand its purpose.
The rain lashed down, each drop a tiny hammer blow against the grimy awning of the abandoned storefront. We were huddled beneath it, the damp seeping into our bones, the stench of stale urine and hopelessness our constant companion. Akari shivered next to me, her eyes wide and unfocused, staring into the downpour as if searching for something, anything, other than the grim reality that was our life. It had been days since the chase, days since Nick’s thugs had nearly caught us, days since we’d traded the relative safety of the alleys for this constant, gnawing fear.
“I can’t… I can’t keep doing this, AJ,” Akari whispered, her voice thin and reedy, barely audible over the drumming rain. Her fingers, stained with God-knows-what from our last “deal,” were clutched tight around her thin arms.
I pulled her closer, trying to offer some semblance of warmth, of protection. “We’ll figure it out, Akari. We always do.” But the words felt hollow, even to me. My usual bravado, the bravado that had gotten us this far, felt like a tattered cloak, riddled with holes and offering little comfort. The thrill of the hustle, the rush of scoring, it had all faded, replaced by a crushing exhaustion and a constant, icy dread.
