The city breathed a heavy, humid sigh, the kind that clung to your skin like a second, unwelcome layer. Rain was threatening, the sky bruised a deep purple, mirroring the knot in my gut. Akari, always the observant one, nudged my arm. “You feel that, AJ?” she whispered, her voice tight. “Something’s wrong.”
She was right. The usual cacophony of the streets – the distant sirens, the rumble of traffic, the shouts of late-night vendors – seemed to have receded, replaced by a prickling awareness, a stillness that screamed danger. We’d been coasting, a precarious balance of survival and fleeting highs, but that fragile peace was shattering like cheap glass. Nick. The name itself was a cold shard. He was the kind of guy who moved in the periphery, a whisper in the shadows of the drug dens, a predator who saw us not as kids trying to claw our way out, but as loose ends, disposable pawns. He’d heard about the artifact. How, I didn’t know, but the grapevine in our world moved faster than any city bus.
“He knows,” I ground out, my jaw tight. “He knows about it. And he knows we have it.”
