The alley air, thick with the stench of stale urine and despair, had become our sanctuary, our kingdom. But tonight, the familiar shadows offered no comfort. The pounding of feet, heavy and relentless, was a drumbeat of pure terror. Akari’s hand, clammy in mine, was a vice grip. Her breath hitched, a ragged sound that mirrored the frantic thumping in my own chest. “AJ, they’re right behind us!” she gasped, her voice a thin thread in the cacophony of our flight.
We’d pushed our luck too far, too fast. The score had been good, a fat bag of something potent enough to make the gnawing emptiness in our stomachs temporarily disappear. But the buzz had been short-lived, replaced by the chilling realization that we’d crossed someone. Someone with connections, someone who didn’t play by the same rules we’d painstakingly learned. Nick. The name slithered into my mind, a cold serpent. He was a ghost from our parents’ past, a shadow that had been slowly encroaching on our present.
“This way!” I yelled, yanking Akari down a narrower passage, more of a crack in the brickwork than an alley. It reeked of damp earth and something metallic, like old blood. My mind raced, a desperate scramble for an escape route, a hiding place. Every instinct screamed danger, but every other option was a dead end. We burst into a small, forgotten courtyard, choked with weeds and refuse. A rusted dumpster hulked in the corner, a potential grave, but too obvious.
