Chapter 19
The Evening Routine
Bedtime arrives. Alice helps tuck in the younger ones. When it's her turn, Mom reads her a special bedtime story, just for her. Alice feels truly seen and loved.
The day, a whirlwind of shared laughter and small dramas, began to soften as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and soft lavender. The air inside the house grew quiet, a hushed anticipation settling over the younger children as the familiar rhythm of the evening routine began. Alice, usually lost in her own quiet thoughts, found herself drawn into the gentle chaos. Alice watched as Olivia, ever so readily, offered a hand. "I can help!" Olivia chirped, her energy undimmed by the late hour. Alice felt a familiar pang, a tiny ache in her chest. Olivia always seemed to know what to do, how to be helpful, how to earn those warm smiles. Alice, on the other hand, often felt like a shadow, observing from the edges, her own attempts at helpfulness sometimes falling flat.
