The sun painted the sky in broad strokes of gold and rose as the family piled into the car, a cheerful jumble of limbs and laughter. The destination was the park, a sprawling wonderland of green grass, towering trees, and the promise of endless adventure. Alice, usually so keen to be noticed, felt a different kind of pull today. It wasn’t a desire for her mom’s direct gaze, but a quiet urge to simply be. As the car rumbled along, she watched the world blur past her window, a kaleidoscope of passing houses and trees.

When they arrived, the air buzzed with the excited chatter of her siblings. Olivia, ever the thoughtful one, immediately looked for Alice. “Come on, Alice!” she called, her voice a gentle invitation. But Alice was already moving. Her feet carried her forward, not in a rush to impress or to catch up, but with a newfound sense of personal momentum. She ran ahead, a small figure against the vast expanse of the park, her red hair a bright flag against the green. She wasn’t trying to prove anything. She wasn’t looking for a special word or a particular smile. She was just running, feeling the wind whip through her hair, the earth firm beneath her shoes.

Her mom, Sandra, watched her go, a soft smile on her face. Mary, standing beside her, squeezed her arm. “She’s finding her own space today,” Mary murmured, her eyes following Alice’s solitary dash. Sandra nodded, her gaze unwavering. She knew Alice’s heart, and today, it seemed to be beating to its own rhythm.
