Alice sat by the window, tracing the condensation with her finger. The world outside was a blur of grey and green, much like the muddled feelings inside her. She’d tried so hard, hadn’t she? The spectacular drawing of a rainbow unicorn, the perfectly stacked tower of blocks, the extra chore done without being asked – each a little offering, a small plea whispered into the bustling air of their home. But Mom’s eyes, so quick to smile at Olivia’s every scraped knee or whispered secret, seemed to glide right over Alice’s efforts, landing instead on something else, someone else. Her own heart ached a little for Alice, for the unspoken sadness that seemed to cling to her like a shadow.

Today, though, something felt different. Alice wasn't actively trying to impress or prove herself. She was simply *there*, a quiet presence by the window, a little less tense than usual. Olivia, with her naturally empathetic gaze, noticed the subtle shift. It was like a tiny ray of sunshine peeking through the clouds.
