Chapter 6
Haunted Memories
Sleep offers no escape. The memory of Maya's touch, her scent, her passionate surrender, replays endlessly, a constant, tormenting reminder of their forbidden night.
Sleep, when it finally came, was a shallow, restless thing. It offered no true respite, no oblivion from the echoes of the night before. Liam tossed and turned, the sheets tangled around him like a desperate embrace. Images flickered behind his closed eyelids, sharp and vivid, replaying the stolen hours with Maya. Her scent, a heady mix of something floral and something uniquely her, clung to him, a phantom perfume that teased and tormented. Her touch, a landscape of exquisite sensation, burned on his skin. Every curve of her body, every soft gasp, every whispered word – they were etched into his memory with a searing permanence, a brand he couldn't erase.
He’d tried. Oh, how he’d tried. The moment the sun had begun to paint the sky in hues of bruised purple and rose, the stark reality had crashed down upon him. Maya. Mark’s sister. His best friend’s little sister. The words themselves felt like a betrayal, a sharp, jagged shard lodged in his gut. He’d pulled away from her, his hands, which had so recently held her with such desperate tenderness, now trembling with a mixture of guilt and a raw, unyielding hunger. Her eyes, wide and luminous in the dim light of her apartment, had held a flicker of confusion, then a dawning understanding, and finally, a shared, silent acknowledgment of the precipice they’d so carelessly, so ecstatically, teetered over.
He’d left her then, a hasty, clumsy retreat that felt as wrong as the night itself. He’d mumbled apologies, promises he knew he couldn’t keep, and fled into the indifferent anonymity of the morning. But the city, usually a balm to his restless soul, now felt like a cage. Every corner he turned, every face he saw, seemed to mock him with its normalcy, its ignorance of the seismic shift that had occurred within him. He was haunted. Not by ghosts, but by a woman. A woman he had known, in the most profound and intimate way, for a handful of hours.
