The Breaking Point

The stale air of Liam’s apartment felt suffocating, a stark contrast to the intoxicating haze of the club that still clung to his senses like a phantom perfume. Days had bled into a week, each sunrise a fresh stab of guilt, each sunset a deepening of the gnawing unease. He’d replayed that night with Maya a thousand times, the memory both a searing brand and a desperate balm. Her eyes, pools of obsidian in the dim light, her touch, a wildfire that had consumed him whole, had rewritten the very architecture of his desire. And then, dawn had broken, shattering the illusion with the cruelest of realities: she was Mark’s sister. His best friend’s sister. Off-limits. Utterly, irrevocably off-limits.

He’d tried. God, he’d tried. He’d thrown himself into work, into the gym, into anything that could drown out the relentless echo of her laughter, the ghost of her scent. He’d avoided Mark, feigning a busy schedule, a sudden onslaught of migraines, anything to keep the inevitable confrontation at bay. Mark, bless his uncomplicated heart, had been understanding, sending concerned texts, offering to bring over pizza and beer. Liam had responded with monosyllabic excuses, his guilt a coiled serpent in his gut. Every casual mention of Maya – a fleeting anecdote about her latest art project, a question about whether Liam had seen her lately – felt like a betrayal, a tightening noose around his already strained conscience.

Today, however, the carefully constructed dam of his avoidance had begun to crack. Maya had called.
