The air in the small, sun-drenched inn room had grown heavy, thick with unspoken words and the scent of old wood. Baby watched Leo, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest, its frantic wings beating against her ribs. The carefree adventurer, the man who had swept her off her feet and out of her quiet life, seemed to shrink before her eyes, his charisma replaced by a profound, almost unbearable vulnerability. He sat on the edge of the narrow bed, his gaze fixed on the worn rug, as if the answer to every question, every doubt, lay etched in its faded patterns.

“Leo,” she began, her voice a soft whisper, afraid to break the fragile silence that had fallen between them. She had followed him here, to this forgotten corner of the world, drawn by a riddle from the Whispering Mapmaker, a riddle that had spoken of shadows and forgotten debts. She had expected an answer, a new destination. She hadn’t expected this.

He finally looked up, his eyes, usually so bright with the fire of adventure, were shadowed, clouded with a pain that mirrored her own dawning fear. “Baby,” he started, his voice rough, raw. He swallowed, a visible effort, then drew a shaky breath. “There are parts of my life… parts of me… that I haven’t shared.”
