As they near home, they realize how much they've changed. The boredom is replaced by a thrilling sense of accomplishment and a deep appreciation for their shared journey.
The familiar scent of pine needles and damp earth, once a symbol of their quiet retirement, now felt like a gentle whisper of hello. The scooter, a valiant if slightly battered companion, hummed a contented tune beneath them as they navigated the winding road that led back to their cozy village. Anya, her grip on Baba Yaga’s shoulders a little less vice-like than it had been at the start of their escapade, let out a sigh that was more relief than exhaustion. Beside her, Baba Yaga’s laughter, a sound that had once been tinged with the thrill of the chase, now held a mellow warmth, like sunshine on old bones.
“See, Anya?” Baba Yaga chirped, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “I told you retirement could be exciting. Just needed a little… nudge.”
Anya managed a small smile. “A nudge? Baba Yaga, we outran a dragon, navigated a river that tried to make us forget our own names, and practically won a scooter race against a flock of remarkably determined geese. I’d call that more of a seismic shove than a nudge.”
