The air in the derelict chapel was thick with a cloying, metallic scent, a perfume of decay that clung to Father Michael’s cassock and pricked at his nostrils. Dust motes, ancient and undisturbed, danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the shattered stained-glass windows, each shard a fractured memory of a forgotten saint. He clutched the relic, its cool, smooth surface a familiar anchor against the rising tide of unease that lapped at the edges of his consciousness. It was here, in this desecrated sanctuary, that the Alpha Wave seemed to gather its strength, a tangible hum of malevolence that vibrated through the very stones.
He had followed the whispers, the chilling premonitions that had haunted his dreams since the first insidious tendrils of the wave had begun to snake through the world. They spoke of a nexus, a point where the veil between realms thinned, and the ancient darkness seeped through with ravenous intent. This chapel, once a beacon of solace, now felt like a gaping maw, ready to swallow him whole.
A low growl, like the grinding of tectonic plates, echoed from the shadows pooling in the apse. Michael’s heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drummer against the encroaching silence. He raised the relic, its intricate silverwork catching the meager light, and whispered a prayer, his voice rough with a weariness that went deeper than bone. “Dominus, adiuva me.”
