They had followed Elmsworth’s winding path, a thread of ancient knowledge woven through the trees, but the wizard had vanished hours ago, promising to return when they needed him most. A twig snapped nearby, sharp and sudden. Tom yelped, pulling Maya closer. “What was that?” he whispered, his voice trembling.
