The air in the Whispering Woods seemed to grow heavier with each step, a thick, velvety darkness pressing in on the four children. Lily, though her heart thumped a frantic rhythm against her ribs, tried to project a calm she didn't feel. The deep shadows, once playful dancers, now seemed to writhe with unseen things, and she squeezed her eyes shut for a fleeting second, battling the prickle of fear that threatened to engulf her. Beside her, Tom kept a tight grip on Maya’s hand, his knuckles white, while Sam, ever the steady one, scanned the tangled undergrowth with a determined frown. They had followed Elmsworth’s winding path, a thread of ancient knowledge woven through the trees, but the wizard had vanished hours ago, promising to return when they needed him most. Now, they were alone, the forest’s whispers morphing from secrets into menacing murmurs.
A twig snapped nearby, sharp and sudden. Tom yelped, pulling Maya closer. “What was that?” he whispered, his voice trembling.
Lily, forcing herself to open her eyes, pointed a shaky finger towards a patch of dense ferns. "I think... I think I saw something move," she breathed.
