A Narrow Escape

Pip’s round, blue body quivered with a mixture of exhilaration and terror. The air in the Prime Number Passages was thick with an unsettling silence, broken only by the distant, echoing drips of unseen water and the frantic thumping of Pip’s own heart. Beside Pip, Professor Sum, his elderly, emerald-green form radiating a calm that Pip desperately wished to borrow, adjusted his spectacles with a trembling, four-fingered hand. They had just stumbled into a particularly ingenious and terrifying trap set by Grump.

The passage they had been following, a twisting corridor of shimmering, iridescent numbers that hummed with latent energy, had suddenly narrowed. The walls, once smooth and cool to the touch, now felt rough and jagged, as if they were closing in. Then, the floor beneath them had vanished, replaced by a dizzying chasm. Below, a swirling vortex of negative numbers churned ominously, promising a swift and unpleasant descent into oblivion.

“Oh, dear,” Professor Sum murmured, his voice barely a whisper. “This is… most inconvenient.”
