The chill of the night air did little to soothe the disquiet that had settled deep within Kyara. It wasn't just the gnawing unease that had been her constant companion since her father's death; it was something new, a prickling sensation beneath her skin, like a thousand tiny needles dancing just below the surface. She traced the familiar curves of the eagle’s wing etched onto her lower back, the faint scar tissue a testament to its permanence. Tonight, however, the mark felt… alive. A subtle warmth radiated from it, a low thrumming that seemed to echo the frantic beat of her own heart.

She was in her father’s study, a room that still held the lingering scent of aged paper and his pipe tobacco. Moonlight, sharp and unforgiving, sliced through the heavy velvet curtains, illuminating dust motes dancing in its wake. It was here, surrounded by the remnants of his formidable reign, that she felt both the most connected to him and the most utterly lost. She had been poring over his ledgers, a futile attempt to make sense of the labyrinthine finances of his empire, when the sensation had begun.

A sudden gust of wind rattled the windowpanes, and Kyara flinched. It wasn’t just the wind; it was a palpable shift in the atmosphere, a sudden drop in temperature that made her shiver despite the thick silk robe she wore. The warmth from her birthmark intensified, spreading across her back like a blush. She stood, her movements stiff, and walked towards the imposing mahogany desk. Her fingers brushed against a small, intricately carved wooden box, one she’d never noticed before. It was nestled amongst a stack of old photographs, almost hidden.
