Chapter 11
The Mother's Secret
Kyara stumbles upon hidden journals or artifacts belonging to her mother, revealing fragments of her past and the truth about her lineage, hinting at a connection to Ashe.
Kyara traced the worn leather of the chest, its surface cool beneath her fingertips. It sat tucked away in the deepest recesses of her mother’s study, a room that had remained untouched since the day she’d been taken. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the intricate carvings on the chest’s lid – swirling patterns that seemed to writhe with a life of their own. She’d found it by accident, a loose floorboard giving way beneath her foot, revealing the hidden compartment. A tremor, not entirely of fear, ran through her. This felt significant, a whispered promise from a past she barely remembered.
With a practiced, yet hesitant, hand, Kyara lifted the heavy lid. The scent of aged paper and dried flowers, a perfume of forgotten memories, wafted out. Inside, nestled amongst faded silk, were journals. Dozens of them, bound in leather that mirrored the chest itself. Her mother’s handwriting, elegant and precise, filled every page. Hesitantly, Kyara picked up the topmost one, its cover embossed with a single, stylized eagle. Her own birthmark. A coincidence? Or something more?
She sank onto the dusty floor, the silence of the room amplifying the beating of her own heart. The first entry was dated years before Kyara was born, a time she could only glimpse through fragmented Lullabies and whispered stories. Her mother’s words painted a picture of a woman of immense strength, not just of will, but of something deeper, something that resonated with the strange hum she sometimes felt within herself.
