The bite of the desert wind was a familiar sting on my cheeks, but today, it carried a different scent – one of woodsmoke and something wild, something untamed. We had been tracking Danthil's trail for days, a relentless pursuit that had worn down my horse and my hope in equal measure. Leif, perched on my shoulder, his leafy skin rustling with every gust, seemed as restless as I was. He’d spent the last few days pointing with his twiggy finger towards the north, a silent insistence that I couldn’t quite decipher, but now, the scent made sense. We were close.

As we crested a low rise, a scene unfolded that made my heart leap. Not with the joy of finding Danthil, but with a surge of something akin to awe. A lone figure, silhouetted against the fiery sunset, was practicing with a whip. The crack of it echoed through the canyon, sharp and precise, a sound that spoke of mastery. The figure moved with a fluid grace, a cowboy, I realized, but not like any I’d ever imagined. This was a woman, her movements honed and fierce, her gaze fixed on some invisible foe.

I urged my horse forward, Leif’s small hand gripping my tunic. The figure didn’t flinch, didn’t break stride. Only when we were mere yards away did she finally lower her whip, her eyes, sharp as a hawk’s, fixing on us. They were the color of a stormy sea, and they held a fire that rivaled the setting sun.
