The dust of my village clung to my boots like a second skin, a gritty reminder of all that was lost. Each step away from the charred remains felt like a betrayal, yet the path ahead was the only one left for me. Beside me, a small, green form rustled, its apple-like skin gleaming faintly in the pale morning sun. Leif. He was a creature of mystery, plucked from the wreckage of a forgotten boat, a silent testament to the world’s strangeness. Yet, in his quiet presence, I found a solace I hadn't expected.

We traveled in comfortable silence for the most part, the rhythm of my horse’s hooves and Leif’s soft shuffling the only sounds to break the vast emptiness. My mind, however, was a storm of memories. Her bright smile, her stubborn spirit, the way she always followed me, no matter how far I ventured. The thought of her in the hands of those monsters was a constant ache in my chest.

Leif would occasionally stir, his small, twig-like limbs extending as if to stretch. Sometimes, he’d emit a soft, chirping sound, a noise that was both alien and strangely comforting. I’d look down at him, and he’d tilt his head, his large, dark eyes, like polished obsidian, fixed on me. I never knew what he was thinking, or what he wanted, but his presence was a steady anchor in the churning sea of my grief.
