The Apple of His Eye
Beneath the fur, Kad discovers Leif, a 'leafling' – an apple-like human. This unique being, vulnerable yet intriguing, becomes Kad's first unexpected companion.
The salt spray had long since washed away, replaced by the damp, musky scent of decaying seaweed and the sharp tang of brine that clung to everything. My fingers, raw and blistered from hours of digging, fumbled with the coarse animal fur. It was matted and thick, clinging to the tiny boat like a second skin, a testament to a rough, hurried journey. Beneath it, I expected to find more wreckage, splintered wood, perhaps a forgotten crate of supplies. What I found instead made my breath hitch, a stark contrast to the grim reality that had become my world.
It was small, this thing nestled within the boat’s shell. Small and impossibly, bizarrely alive. At first glance, it resembled a perfectly formed apple, a deep, vibrant red that pulsed with a faint, internal light. But as I brushed away the last stubborn strands of fur, the apple shifted. A delicate, almost translucent limb unfurled, followed by another. Then, a small, perfectly formed head emerged, crowned with a shock of moss-green hair that seemed to shimmer. Two large, liquid eyes, the color of polished amber, blinked slowly, taking in my dirt-streaked face and the desolate shore.
It was a leafling. I’d heard the old tales, whispered by the firelight on long winter nights, of beings born from the heart of ancient orchards, creatures of fruit and earth. They were said to be shy, reclusive, and rarely seen. And here, washed ashore like a discarded bauble, was one.
