The air in the Serpent's Nest was thick with the stench of dried blood and stale fear. It clung to the rough-hewn stones of the cavern, a testament to the horrors that had unfolded within its shadowed depths. Kad, Leif clinging to his shoulder, Shershey a silent, watchful presence at his side, moved with a grim determination that had been forged in the fires of loss and tempered by the long, arduous journey. Each step echoed in the oppressive silence, a prelude to the storm that was about to break.

They had tracked Danthil here, to this hidden stronghold, following the faintest of trails and the desperate whispers of those who had managed to escape his clutches. The raiders were scattered, their ranks depleted from the desperate skirmish at their former camp. But Danthil, the architect of Kad’s suffering, was still here. And Kad would not rest until the serpent was slain.

The main chamber of the Nest was vast, illuminated by sputtering torches that cast dancing, monstrous shadows on the walls. In the center, atop a makeshift throne of bones and scavenged armor, sat Danthil. He was larger than Kad remembered, his face a mask of cruel satisfaction, a jagged scar bisecting his left eyebrow. Around him, a handful of his most loyal, most brutal warriors stood, their weapons glinting in the torchlight.
