They finally locate Danthil's hidden stronghold. It's a place of dread, defended by his most loyal and dangerous followers, a final confrontation awaits.
The air grew thick, not with the salty tang of the sea that had been my constant companion, but with a cloying, metallic scent that spoke of decay and something far older, far fouler. Leif, nestled in the crook of my arm, shivered, his smooth skin rippling like water. "It feels…wrong, Kad," he whispered, his voice a rustle of leaves. Shershey, her rifle held steady, scanned the jagged cliffs that loomed before us. Her usual swagger was muted, replaced by a grim focus.
"This is it," she breathed, her eyes narrowed. "The Serpent's Nest. My father always spoke of it in hushed tones, a place where even the bravest men feared to tread."
The cliffs rose like the teeth of some ancient, slumbering beast, riddled with caves and shadowed crevices. A narrow, winding path, barely more than a goat track, snaked its way upwards, disappearing into the gloom. The silence was profound, broken only by the distant, mournful cry of a seabird and the thumping of my own heart against my ribs. Every instinct screamed at me to turn back, to flee this place that reeked of death and despair. But the image of Martill, her small, trusting face, flashed in my mind, and my feet moved forward, compelled by a force stronger than fear.
