The sun beat down with an unyielding intensity, baking the dust into a fine powder that coated everything. Shershey adjusted the brim of her hat, the worn leather a familiar comfort against her brow. This land, vast and unforgiving, was her proving ground, the place where she intended to carve her name into the very earth. Kad rode beside her, his gaze fixed on the horizon, a silent sentinel of his own relentless pursuit. Leif, perched on Kad’s shoulder, occasionally chirped a soft, melodic sound that seemed to echo the wind’s own lament.
They had been following Danthil’s trail for days, a wispy thread of smoke and scattered debris that spoke of his hurried passage. Each sign, no matter how small, fueled Kad’s burning need for retribution, while Shershey saw it as another step toward the life she craved. She yearned to be more than what her father, and so many others, deemed her capable of. A woman’s place, they whispered, was not in the saddle, not with a rope in her hand, not facing down danger with grit and unflinching resolve.
“He’s heading towards the Serpent’s Tooth mountains,” Shershey said, her voice a low rumble, cutting through the drone of the wind. “They say those peaks are riddled with caves, perfect for an outlaw to hide.”
