The air, thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, pressed in on us. Each crackle of a twig underfoot, each distant bird call, felt amplified, a drumbeat against the taut silence that now seemed our constant companion. We were deep in the Whisperwood, a place the raiders, so brutal in the open, seemed to fear. Danthil, that snake, had slithered away, and the memory of his sneering triumph, the glint of malice in his eyes as he’d vanished into the trees, was a brand on my soul. He’d taken everything, and now he was just *gone*, a loose end that gnawed at me with every breath.

Leif, perched on my shoulder, his leafy skin rustling like a thousand tiny secrets, was unusually still. His large, dark eyes, those pools of ancient understanding, scanned the dense canopy above, a flicker of something unreadable passing through them. He’d been quieter than usual since we’d left the wreckage of the raider camp, ever since that desperate fight where Shershey had shown us the true meaning of grit, her spurs a blur against the chaos. We’d freed the villagers, yes, and that was a victory that warmed the deepest corners of my heart, but Martill… Martill was still out there, a phantom in my mind, dragged away by Danthil’s filth.

“You feel it too, don’t you?” I murmured, my voice a low rasp. The forest seemed to hold its breath, waiting.
