A Vow Renewed
Kad decides he cannot rest until Danthil is brought to justice. The guilt of his past fuels a new, more dangerous determination. He must end Danthil's reign of terror.
The salt wind, once a gentle caress against my skin, now felt like a lash, stinging my eyes and burning the raw grief in my chest. Even as the last embers of the raiders’ fires died to ash behind us, even as the freed villagers stumbled towards the hesitant promise of a new dawn, a gnawing emptiness remained. It was a hollowness that no victory, no rescue, could fill. Danthil was gone. He was a ghost, a phantom that had slipped through my fingers, leaving behind the stench of his cruelty and the bitter taste of unfinished business.
Leif, perched on my shoulder, his small, leafy body a comforting weight, chirped softly. It was a sound of concern, a question without words. I stroked his smooth, cool skin, the familiar texture a small anchor in the swirling chaos of my thoughts. Shershey, her face smudged with dirt and exhaustion, but her eyes blazing with a fierce satisfaction, watched the villagers disperse. Her father’s words, the ones that had fueled her every action, seemed to have lost some of their sting in the face of her own triumph.
“They are safe, Kad,” she said, her voice raspy. “That’s what matters.”
