Danthil, though defeated, escapes. His survival is a chilling promise of future conflict. Kad knows this fight is far from over; he must hunt him down.
The air tasted of ash and victory, a bitter concoction that coated Kad’s tongue. Around him, the freed villagers wept, their faces streaked with grime and relief. Martill, her hair a tangled mess, clung to him, her small frame trembling. He held her tight, the warmth of her a stark contrast to the icy void that had consumed him for so long. Shershey, her face grim but resolute, stood guard, her rifle held steady. Leif, nestled in the crook of his arm, made a soft, chirping sound, a tiny echo of the chaos that had just passed.
But the taste of ash lingered. Danthil. The name was a venomous snake coiled in Kad’s gut. He’d seen him, a silhouette against the setting sun, slipping away into the dense forest that bordered the raiders’ temporary camp. Defeated, yes. But not broken. Not finished.
“He’s gone,” Shershey stated, her voice low and gravelly. She lowered her rifle, but her eyes, sharp and observant, kept scanning the tree line. “The bastard got away.”
