The air, thick with the stench of brine and blood, became a battlefield. The raiders, a howling tide of hardened men, surged forward, their cruel laughter echoing the screams of the past. My hand tightened on the worn leather of my sword hilt, the familiar weight a meager comfort against the rising tide of fear. Beside me, Leif, no bigger than my forearm, stood poised, his leafy tendrils rustling with an energy I hadn’t seen before. Shershey, a whirlwind of denim and determination, drew her own blade, a glint of defiance in her eyes that mirrored my own.

"For the village!" I roared, the words ripped from my throat, a desperate prayer and a promise.

The first impact was brutal. A burly raider, his face a roadmap of scars, swung a crude axe at me. I parried, the clang of steel against steel jarring my arm. He was strong, but years of farm labor had given me a different kind of strength, a grounded power that refused to yield. I ducked under his next swing, the wind of it ruffling my hair, and drove my sword into his side. He grunted, stumbling back, his eyes wide with surprise before he collapsed.
