The heavy velvet draperies of my chambers felt like a shroud, muffling the sounds of the waking palace. Each morning was a fresh descent into the gilded cage, the stark reality of my duties a sharp contrast to the moonlit whispers and stolen glances I craved. I, Prince Vernin, was back to being Kai in name only, the phantom of the masked ball a constant ache in my chest. My father, King Theron, sat across from me, his presence a formidable force of tradition and expectation. His gaze, though not unkind, was always assessing, always looking for the prince he envisioned, not the one who found solace in the quiet, hidden corners of his own heart.
"You seem distant this morning, Vernin," he stated, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the polished oak table. "The ball was perhaps too stimulating for your delicate constitution?"
