The chill of the late autumn air was a welcome contrast to the stifling opulence of the ballroom. I pulled the collar of my cloak tighter, the rough wool a familiar comfort against my skin. Winter was waiting. The thought sent a familiar flutter through my chest, a feeling as intoxicating as the finest wine, and infinitely more precious. We had arranged this meeting with the stealth of two spies, a furtive exchange of coded messages tucked into the folds of serving trays and whispered to trusted stable hands. The sheer audacity of it, the delicious danger, was a potent aphrodisiac.
He was waiting in the shadow of the old oak by the Whispering Creek, a place I had known since childhood, a place of quiet contemplation and secret childhood adventures. Even in the dim moonlight, his silhouette was instantly recognizable, a study in elegant lean strength. He turned as I approached, and the moonlight caught the glint of his eyes. They held a familiar warmth, a spark that ignited something deep within me, a longing I hadn’t dared to acknowledge until he appeared, a masked enigma at a ball I had almost not attended.
“Kai,” he breathed, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through me. It was a sound I had come to crave, a melody that soothed the constant hum of doubt that often plagued my days.
