Vernin, or Kai as I still sometimes thought of him, sat across from me, his gaze steady and warm. The faint shimmer of the magical wards he’d conjured to ensure our privacy still clung to the air, a testament to his careful nature. I watched him, the lines of his face softened by the firelight, the subtle strength in his jaw, the kindness that had first drawn me in, even through the artificiality of the masked ball. He was no longer just ‘Kai,’ the intriguing stranger who’d danced with me through the night. He was Vernin, Prince of Eldoria, and he was mine.
“So,” he began, his voice a low rumble, laced with a hint of amusement, “this is it then. No more pretending?”
