The air in the throne room was thick with unspoken accusations, a suffocating weight that pressed down on my chest. Sunlight, usually a welcome visitor, felt harsh and unforgiving as it streamed through the high, arched windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the tense silence. King Theron sat upon his imposing throne, his face a mask of stern disapproval, his gaze fixed on me. Beside him, Vernin stood, his posture rigid, his eyes—my Vernin’s eyes—flickering between his father and me, a silent plea in their depths.

This was it. The precipice. My past had finally caught up, dragging me from the shadows and into the blinding light of royal judgment. No more disguises, no more whispered meetings in moonlit gardens. Kael, the thief, the outcast, stood before the king, stripped bare of all pretense.

“You… you are the one?” King Theron’s voice rumbled, a low growl that vibrated through the polished stone floor. His eyes narrowed, scrutinizing me as if I were some venomous snake unearthed from the palace dungeons. “The one who has been… consorting with my son?”
